Twenty Thousand Gold Stars is a contemporary realistic novel about friendship between adults and about adult attraction to minors, both adolescent and prepubescent. There is no onscreen sex or violence in the novel. Because of the sensitive subject matter, parental supervision is strongly suggested. Readers who have undergone traumatic experiences related to the subject matter may wish to approach the novel with caution. The Author's Note includes comments on the limitations of this novel.

The novel also addresses a number of other topics, such as religion (especially Christianity), recovery, gays and ex-gays, former prisoners, history of sexuality, and human rights.
