North American Zoroastrians Vote Down New World Council
Zoroastrian News (Zoroastrian Association of Metropolitan Washington, Inc.)

The 22 associations constituting the Federation of Zoroastrian Associations of North America have voted down the motion that "FEZANA join the World Council of Zarathushti Federations as a founding member." Of the votes cast, 28.14 were against the motion, 20.71 were for the motion and there were several abstentions. The votes allotted to associations vary according to the strength of their membership. ZAMWI cast its three votes against the motion.

Dr. Dolly P. Dastoor, the president of FEZANA, announcing the result commented, "Almost all the associations have felt that the current structure of WZO [the London-based World Zoroastrian Organization] is not adequate for a world body as it is not properly representative and the proposed amendments do no go far enough. The prevailing sentiment from each of the associations was in favor of one truly representative apex world body which would be capable of representing the Zarathushti community on issues requiring political/humanitarian/doctrinal intervention."
