All of the information below is unconfirmed by True Tales. Donors should show appropriate caution in checking the credentials of organizations they donate to.

Please note that the Resources for Evacuees section includes projects for relief being sponsored by leather/BDSM/bear organizations and GLBT organizations. These organizations are also seeking monetary and non-monetary donations. That section also includes links to lists of relief fundraisers.

RELIEF FUNDRAISERS IN THE LEATHER, BDSM, AND BEAR COMMUNITIES

Ongoing: National relief effort sponsored by International Mr. Leather 2005, Michael Egdes, through Sunshine Cathedral MCC, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Donations may be made online or mailed. See Michael Egdes's Website for details.

Ongoing: Leather Tribe Based Relief Fund, sponsored by International LeatherSIR and Leatherboy. Monetary and non-monetary donations accepted. See also the entry below for October 7. Beneficiary: "Leather tribe family members and businesses in the Leather Communities affected."

"The Leather Fund is being established as a Louisiana nonprofit corporation with the purpose of meeting the long term rebuilding and restablishment needs of the Leather Community affected by Hurricane Katrina. As a goal the Leather Fund has set a minimum level of $200,000 in resources. It is believed that out of tragedy often comes benefit and it is hoped by those that are establishing this fund that the fund will be there not only for this disaster, but for whatever future disasters may strike our community. Ongoing: Fundraiser for the Crescent City Outlaws and the Knights d'Orleans by the Mid-America Conference of Clubs. The MACC announces: "Any money sent and stated to be given to individuals will be given as such. All other money sent will be divided out equally between the two clubs. A St. Louis, Missouri, coalition is providing housing and other assistance for leatherfolk and BDSM folk who are evacuees. The coalition works in conjunction with the local MCC church and is tracking offers of assistance from various places in the Midwest. Non-leather GLBT and HIV+ evacuees can also be assisted. [updated] In an article for The Dominant's View (see the site's warning page also), a group representative reports, "It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of some members during the storm and evacuation. Those who were lost to the storm will be missed dearly. A memorial service will be held for them at the NOBLE Refuge once repairs have been completed."

B-BOB'S BAR

The bar owner's partner says:

"[The bar's] doorman – Terry – lost everything in the storm. . . . Mobile did have significant downtown flooding but the water stopped one to two blocks shy of the gay district here and most of the gay bars were spared significant damage."

CAPE: Central Alabama Power Exchange (Montgomery)

A group representative says:

"While we had some flooding and some pretty severe wind damage [in Mobile], all in all we weren't badly harmed as a city by the hurricane. . . . There are several people here that are involved with the lifestyle community; so far we have heard of no one being injured or sustaining any serious loss of property."

DARE (Sylacauga)

A group representative says:

"To the best of our knowledge, no one from our group or from neighboring groups was catastrophically affected. Some did have to evacuate, and some will be cleaning up for a while, but luckily there was no loss of life or major property damage."

FDMS: FemDom, MaleSub (various locations)

A group representative says:

"Thus far we have not had any reports of anyone missing; only one person displaced and in Memphis for the moment."

In an update, the representative adds:

"Latest news is that we have three people who have lost everything and are homeless. One other is homeless but was able to rescue some things from her dwelling (we think) or she believes she can return at a later date and find her house still intact."

A new update:

"All of my members are safe and sound, several had loved ones in the areas hit but so far all are doing fine, losses in personal items but no deaths even of vanilla family members that have been reported."

GULF COAST BEAR AND LEATHER ASSOCIATION (Mobile)

"All of our members are accounted for. Some had lots of damage but are safe."

SAFE: Southeast Alabama Fetish Enthusiasts (Dothan)

A group representative says:

"In our local area there was little or no damage. . . . We do have folks who attend from the Florida panhandle that I have not heard from; however, if something was wrong it would have been heard through the grapevine."

STEEL CITY CENTURIONS (Birmingham)

A group representative says:

"All I can tell you as of right now is that one of the past presidents lost a few trees in his yard and the rest of us lost power for an extended period of time, but even that has been taken care of."

A group representative says that there have been no serious problems in their area other than power outages and gas shortages.

SMART: Southern Mississippi Associates in Roses and Thorns (Moss Point)

A group representative says:

"Though some of our members did incur some damage, they are all accounted for. A few have yet to return to their homes close to the coast. One knows she has lost her house. . . . Water damage came in the form of a twenty foot water rise that reached 1/2 mile inland from the coast. These are the people who likely suffered the most."

TUPELO MUNCH (Tupelo)

A group representative says:

"We're in the northern part of Mississippi. Other than storm damage (downed trees and such), we made it through OK."

A group representative says:

"We have not heard from [all of our members] but things were so relatively noneventful here there was not concern about missing persons or loss of life."

HOUSTON AREA BEARS

A group representative says:

"We are currently accessing how all our members have fared through the storm. We were fortunate that the storm took some last minute turns and spared a direct hit in the Houston/Galveston area. We do have members across the area including some as far away as Beaumont and into Louisiana."

A later report says:

"We have not had any reports of our members being directly affected by Hurricane Rita."

HOUSTON LEATHER BOYS

A group representative says, following Hurricane Rita:

"The Houston Leather Boys are fine as are the members of the other leather/levi clubs here in Houston."
