Alternative Formats for the General Public

Amazon.com: Gay and Lesbian Audiocasettes. Titles listed by one the biggest online booksellers. You can also do keyword searches within the following sections to find the gay and lesbian books in other alternative formats: Amazon.com: Audio CDs and Amazon.com: Large Print.

Barnes & Noble: Audio – Gay and Lesbian Fiction and Barnes & Noble: Large Print – Gay and Lesbian Fiction. Titles from another big bookseller.

Beyond the Closet Bookstore: Audio. The audio book section of a Seattle gay bookstore.

Fictionwise.com. A bookseller offering electronic books, electronic magazines, and audio books. Most booksellers fail to tell their visitors whether the read-aloud function of each e-book is enabled. For that information, you need to go to Fictionwise.com's site. To find the gay and lesbian books, just do a keyword search at their site, or search for the author or title.

Alternative Formats for the Blind

Bookshare.org: Gay and Lesbian Titles. Five hundred books at last count. Titles that have mature content are not listed unless you are signed in as an adult member. Bookshare.org is an online electronic library for U.S. residents who can't easily read standard-sized print. There is a one-time membership fee and a yearly fee. Books are available in electronic braille and in DAISY Digital Talking Book format (a kind of electronic text). It is also possible to order an embossed braille copy of books without being a member of Bookshare.org, provided that the book does not contain mature content. Triangle Braille Services. A press that formerly published gay and lesbian braille books, no longer active. Some of their books are available on loan to individuals who are members of the Quatrefoil Library, a GLBT library in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Womyn's Braille Press. Feminist audio books and braille books. The press no longer directly loans books; their books may now be may be borrowed by way of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, which is the American public library service for person who can't easily read standard-sized print.

Lambda Resource Center for the Blind. A subsection of Womyn's Braille Press with audio books primarily (but not exclusively) of interest to gay men. The center no longer directly loans books; their books may now be borrowed by way of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, which is the American public library service for person who can't easily read standard-sized print.

All of the major libraries for the blind, and some presses for the blind, offer GLBT books, but these must usually be searched for by keywords, such as "gay," "lesbian," "homosexuality," "lesbianism," and similar words. Here is a select list of organizations for the blind whose online catalogues include gay materials.

National Information and Library Service. The above library system is located in Australia.

National Library for the Blind. The above library system is located in the United Kingdom.

National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. The above library system is located in the United States.

Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. The above organization is located in the United States, but it serves members worldwide.

Sites on Gay and Lesbian Topics from the Perspective of Disabled People

Blind Friends of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People. Also known as BFLAG. This is the only site on the Web devoted to gay and lesbian issues from the perspective of the blind community. The organization's newsletter is online.

Gay Library: Ability & Disability. A Web directory of disability organizations around the world that deal with gay and lesbian issues. This page is part of Gay Library, a resource site.
